The Immigrants

“…And from the teaming shores, the wretched refuse came like hungry mosquitoes to the yellow porchlight of freedom.”-“The Immigrants”-National Lampoon Radio Hour.

“It is both a right and a responsibility of a democratic society to manage immigration so that it serves the national interest.”-Barbara Jordon

It wasn’t so long ago, that the United States was importing thousands of human beings to work the cotton fields. Democratic society was DEFINITELY managing the national interest back then.

I know. I know. I’m twisting the words of Barbara Jordon, she being a civil rights icon and all. Slavery isn’t the topic here, but the demand of or president, Donald Trump, that the people of the United States pay for a border wall to keep out the South American riffraff. My suggestion is a Fundme campaign, but apparently there already IS a Fundme campaign. It’s just not bringing in the hundreds of millions of dollar the wall will ultimately cost. Only the government can do that.

Unfortunately, the Federal Government has been shut down over this funding dilemma, with the Democratic controlled house all with its panties in bunches and the President in kind of a middle finger pointing mood. I would normally think less government is good, but apparently a lot of people have paychecks dependent on the Feds. Air Traffic controllers. Food Safety. The FBI. Northrup Grumman.

Personally, I think the business of a Wall is a feelgood moment for the United States. With our military stuck in all kinds of no win situations throughout the world, the Chinese asserting their communist heritage by messing with American business, and oxycodone taking the place of heroin as drug of choice, we need to feel in control. It feels good to have Democrats actually taking some sort of stand on something and President Trump thumbing his nose at whatever that might be. It makes us think Democracy is working. We’re Americans, dammit! The leaders of the free world! And if we choose to keep the free world out, well, that’s our own damn business!
